I often have the situation where I want to put a page turn after a multimeasure rests, but the rest doesn't lie at the end of the system. So I push the notes following the rest onto the next page and with default spacing wind up with something like this:

As you can see above, the two measures beginning the last system are very wide and look silly. So I have to correct this manually:

JW Space Empty Measures/Redistribute non-rest measures helps--I widen the multimeasure rest and then run the plug-in, which will respace but leave the multimeasure rest alone. But there is still trial and error involved.

What I would like is a way to make the measures with music their ideal width according to the music spacing options I've defined, and then expand the multimeasure rest to take up the remaining space. Surely others are faced with this situation--what do you do?

(I am grateful for the JW plug-in, which I recall he added at my suggestion. Before that, it was really a hassle to get it looking right).

This doesn't answer your question, but such a wide multi-measure rest measure looks unattractive to me. I, personally, would redo the layout of the two pages to avoid it.

I try to, but it's usually not possible for the kind of thing I do. It's not as unattractive as the first picture.

Personally, I don't have much of a problem with the first example. The second example appears too crowded. I might send 2 measures from the previous system down and that would provide a better balance, I think. It's amazing how we all look at things so differently.

I see this a lot, too. Most of my concert stuff fits (the parts) on two pages so it doesn't leave a lot of room to adjust. The JW plug-ins and Perfect Layout are great helpers for sure.
