I had to send someone a xml of one of my finale files, and did the usual "export as XML" thing... but I didn't notice that for some bizarre reason, it does NOT export as .XML by default, it creates some sort of .MXL file (notice the reversed letters), which was not supported by Sibelius (what the other person was using).

I was able to finally get an actual .XML file out (it was NOT the 1st choice, it was actually last in the drop down list).

Is this a bug of some sort?

or is this .MXL a new file type?

is there supposed to be some advantage to using that? (it's obviously not supported by all programs, since Sibelius can't import it)

Actually there are 3 different “variations” of the MusicXML file format:

.xml = XML file
This is the original - “legacy” - file format.
It is just an XML file, just like any other XML file from any other program; just a code written in letters.

.musicxml = Music XML file
This is the current MusicXML file format which supports more Finale data than the original .xml file format.
If I remember correctly, the .musicxml file format came with version 3.0 of MusicXML.

.mxl = compressed Music XML file
This is the newest format. It is a compressed version of .musicxml.

(Somebody please correct me if I am wrong)

does anyone know if any of these versions has a higher success chance of retaining formatting, etc... when imported into another music program?

MusicXML exists in different versions which are discussed and developed by the w3c Music Notation Community Group. The smaller the MusicXML version number of the saving/source notation program, the higher the propability that the opening/target notation program can interpret it. But certain advanced things can only be described in higher MusicXML versions.

A likely MusicXML sucessor, named MNX is under development. It might replace MusicXML at some time (but we all know how long things like this could take).
