I was just wondering if there's a way to bypass the instrument sounds when entering notes on a Finale score and hear piano. I would rather put the notes in, and can hear better what I'm doing, if I hear a piano rather than the particular instrument that's on the score. I used to find one channel in the 16 where I could do that but now with Finale 25 on High Sierra, I don't seem to be able. When I'm entering the notes, the sound I hear is the particular instrument that is on the staff that I'm working on. I always "Play Finale Through Midi" since that's the sounds I'm used to.

Go to Score Manager and (temporarily) change the instrument to piano. Change it back when you’re done.

The thing is, I used to be able to hear piano for the input and the instrument for the playback, which is what I want because I do a lot of my composing that way and find I can translate my thoughts to music better with the piano sound. I used to be able to scroll though the 16 channels until I'd always hit one that was piano, but I can't seem to do that anymore.

MIDI/AUDIO->Device Setup->MIDI Thru

You must have it set to "Smart".

Instead, select fixed channel and set the number to an unused channel. The default is a piano sound. You can look in the Score Manager to see which channels have been assigned instrument sounds.

But wouldn't he still have to switch back and forth to hear piano on input, and instrument on playback?

It turns out I had "Smart" on Midi-through instead of Fixed Channel. I clicked the Fixed Channel button and it fixed my problem.

No, the mysteriously named "MIDI Thru" only applies to the input sound.
