Upgrading question

This is possibly a dumb question, but here goes.
Next week I'll be receiving a new mac computer (Big Sur) onto
which I will want to put Finale v26. I am purchasing it as an upgrade to
my current Finale 2011, which is on my old computer.
Will the download of the new Finale onto my new computer
be sufficient? Or do I need to have my old Finale (2011) on the new
computer before downloading v26? (I assume v26 is only available
as a download, not a CD.) Thanks.

Be aware that Finale 26 has not yet been declared compatible with Big Sur. We are waiting for a confirmation or an update.
(https://www.finalemusic.com/blog/finale ... s-big-sur/).
And if you buy a new Mac with the new M1 processor, there might be additional problems.
P.S. : Finale 2011 won't function on Big Sur
Finale 26 will be a separate installation, not applied on Finale 2011.

Are you saying that I should not purchase/download Finale v26 for my new computer until there is confirmation
that it works OK on Big Sur? If so, how long should I expect to wait until that confirmation?

Yes, exactly, it's probably better to wait for MakeMusic to give a green light (When is a question to which only MakeMusic can answer). Visit their blog in the following days via the link I gave you, and follow this forum.
What processor does your new Mac have ? Intel or the brand new M1 ?

I believe it's Intel Iris.

If it's Intel, compatibility issues should be limited and hopefully fixed rapidly. We are all waiting for MakeMusic to communicate.

Until Finale is recompiled for the ARM processor, it's bound to run pretty slowly in the Intel emulation mode.

Benchmarks have shown that the M1 chip emulating Intel is still faster than every other Mac, on a single core, and beats an 8-core 2013 Mac Pro on multi-core.

So 'pretty slow' may be relative.

On Intel, I've been running Finale on Big Sur without any noticeable problems.

I would be running v26 on Intel. In another post someone mentioned "cosmetic" issues. But I don't know what that
means. I'm currently running Finale 2011 on El Capitan. It crashes often, and there is no sound. I'm hoping to find someone who can walk me thru the installation when I get v26 onto my Big Sur. Thank you Sir.

I'm holding off on updating to Big Sur until 1) Finale confirms full compatibility and 2) Apple releases their first maintenance update.

Of course, if your new computer already has Big Sur loaded, you don't have any choice. Install 26 and let us know how it works!

Cosmetic issues are things that affect the visual appearance in a superficial way, without affecting the ability of the program to run and do useful work.

If you were buying it because of the great price on the Black Friday deal, I would go ahead and do it now. Work with it however you can for the present because the update for your OS will probably be free.
