If I make an edit by clicking on a handle in the SmartShape tool and adjusting one of the subhandles, then switch to the Selection tool, the SmartShape handles remain and I need to redraw with Ctrl-D to get rid of them. This sounds minor, but it's annoying because I'm typically making many such fine adjustments late in the game and need to see the music without the distraction and clutter of the handles afterwards.

This behavior is actually true of other tools as well--Expression and Articulation--but those things can be adjusted from the Selection tool itself.

Does the latest version of Finale still do this? Has anyone come up with a way around having to refresh? I'm using the keyboard remapper to assign a function key to switch to the Selection tool, but Esc and Tools/Selection Tool have the same problem. I think a FinaleScript would be too slow, and probably wouldn't work from parts. I guess I could have Autohotkey switch to the tool and then send Ctrl-D.

I don't see that behavior in v26. I tried to be certain I followed your steps. After editing, I used the mouse to choose the Selection Tool and the handles disappeared. Double-clicking Esc also got the Selection Tool without the handles showing.

Thanks very much for checking. Either they've fixed it, or there's something anomalous in my set-up, I guess.

I have Automatic Spacing and Automatic Update Layout on. Do you?

Yes.

Finale 2011 exhibits the problem as well, though apparently only with slurs, not hairpins. Oddly, the handle of the slur that has been adjusted is removed, but others on the display remain.

I don't think it's a matter of 2014.5 having this problem and it having been fixed in v.26. I am using the same 2014.5 and do not experience this. I can go back to the selection tool by clicking on the menu, double Esc, or by any shortcut, and all the handles disappear without having to re-draw the screen. Must be something with your particular setup?

Must be, mmike--thanks for checking.

I solved it by having Autohotkey send two Escapes followed by Ctrl-D when a function key is pressed. Since I'd been using a function key to get to the Selection tool via the keyboard mapper, it took me a while to realize you need an escape to get out of whatever shape you're editing before a second one gets you the selection tool, and thus two.

Anyway, problem solved, and this will save me some time and repetitive strain.

As usual, it took a lot of fooling around to get it to work reliably. Alt-V R is more reliable than Ctrl-D for some reason; though I tried various delays, etc., Ctrl-D was not always getting processed.
