I'm a bit concerned about the notifications on my new Mac, to "install updates."
Are these system updates that will affect Finale? I have just gone through a tough
period getting my Finale v26 to work with Catalina, it works fine now, but I don't
want to spoil Finale by allowing updates that make it incompatible. Any thoughts?

I'm still using Mojave, but installing the security updates for Catalina should be safe with Finale. Somebody who is using Catalina may be able to give a more authoritative response.

Catalina seems to he working fine, for me.

I can add that Finale is working on my Big Sur OS. I went from Mojave to Big Sur in one jump. My keyboard's USB driver isn't ready for Big Sur yet, but I have an external midi interface which works with Big Sur. The TGTools and JW plugins are behaving themselves after I fingerpoked with the developer permissions in System Prefs.
