I have an arpeggio in 8th notes for the piano. Notes are to be held with fingers rather than the pedal. Is there an easy was to do this all in one voice? This picture is an example of what I mean.

Do you want it to sound right, or just look right? If it's just for the looks you can cheat with slurs. Sounding right requires extra steps.

Primarily I want it to look like standard notation. I've done it the way Zuill suggested which is pretty easy but not really standard. I can fake it using multiple voices but that's too much work. I want to be able to carry the ties over the intervening notes. And I need it to be easy because I have about 50 measures that do this.

Finale can't do what you want easily. You can get playback by doing it the way I showed in a hidden layer, and do it the way you have it in Layer 1, for the look. Mute the layer 1 notes, but have the hidden layer notes be used for playback.

This is something that is asked about on a fairly regular basis. Do other notation apps have such a feature? (Just asking; not trying to stir up trouble.)

I figured out a way to do it, not with a hidden layer but with a hidden stave. The hidden stave has the notation that sounds right for playback. Then in the displayed stave instead of using ties I added slurs and positioned them to look like ties. This stave doesn't have an instrument assigned to it so it stays silent. It's going to be a lot of work but I'll get a score that looks standard, which is what I was after.

Thanks for the ideas.

I don't know if this is a common capability in other apps, but it is a common standard notation so arguably it should be supported.

I've attached a file. The first system has 3 options (the first of which I posted a picture earlier). The second and third samples use Voice 2 (with Voice 1 hidden) to accomplish the task. Voice 1 plays back, but Voice 2 is muted. The second sample uses ties manually adjusted, and the third sample uses Beat Attached Slurs.

The second system uses Layers. Layer 2 is hidden, but playback is active. Layer 1 shows, but playback is muted. The slurs used in the second sample are note attached.

The use of Layers is much easier to accomplish, and doesn't require a second staff. Hiding a layer and muting playback is easily accomplished with the JW Change plugin.

Here's a demo of my procedure using Layers.
