Missing note from Tuplet group
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hello, I am attempting to engrave a sextuplet group that has 3 16th notes, and 6 32nd notes, as shown here :https://imgur.com/g14i9Vr
However, when I use simple entry and the alt-9 tuplet tool, six 16ths in the space of 4, then try to click in the 32nd notes, I am unable to enter the final 32nd note. Like this: https://imgur.com/1uTht3O
How can I get that last 32nd note in the measure?
Thanks,

It works for me on the Mac. I used Speedy and started the triplet with opt-3 and the 6-let with opt-6.
Does that help?

Simple Entry seems to be a complete mess on Windows.
If I use 6 in the space of 4 and don't delete the rests created for the tuplet, I get this: If I use 6 in the space of 1 quarter and don't delete the rests, I get this: If I use 6 in the space of 4 and delete the rests first, I get this: Simple entry is way buggy when it comes to tuplets. You may be better off learning Speedy entry than trying to work around it, at least for tuplets.

You might try turning off "Check for extra notes" in the Simple entry options. I did the above with QWERTY entry, not the mouse.geleybou wrote: ↑Thu Feb 18, 2021 5:41 pmHowever, when I use simple entry and the alt-9 tuplet tool, six 16ths in the space of 4, then try to click in the 32nd notes, I am unable to enter the final 32nd note. Mac and Windows works differently here in Simple. Entering with the keyboard leaves the extra 16th rest in the measure, which is unwanted. If you use the mouse, you can avoid that. Why can't the programmers have the same bugs in all of the platforms????

Aha. When I select "Check for Extra Notes", I can't enter the last 32nd either. My conclusion: Finale is terrible at Math!!!

I'm glad it worked. When we give advice, we need to remember to try to get the information like that that can lead to odd behavior. Even though there are no extra notes, Finale thinks there are.
Also, for Keyboard Entry, we need to remember that Windows is broken there, but not Mac. So knowing the OS is important. Since we knew you are on Windows, we knew that it couldn't do what Mac can do.

I have no trouble with tuplets. The only issue with the more complex combinations (like this one) might be an extra rest at the end. BFD. Forward arrow if needed, DELETE.
(More complex = anything more than 3 in the space of 2)

Mike,
Are you saying you also got an extra rest at the end? Your picture didn't show that, so I assumed Mac didn't have that bug.

As Zuill says, there appear to be differences between Windows and Mac. I would say the things I posted above are a BFD, and I'm almost certain I was using the tool right. Hard to defend that.
Within the past year or so I discovered some nasty bugs having to do with end-of-bar tuplets and we had a discussion about it here, but I couldn't find the thread. I think I reported it to MM; I seem to recall it did something wild like create 256th notes. I remember in one case you could get around it by deleting the rests first, whereas in another case deleting the rests created the mess. A lot of the problem is that none of this is obvious to people who haven't suffered through it before (why should it matter if you delete the rests?), as evidenced by scores of questions here over the years.

Zuill slipped in with that question. In one of my pictures above, the extra rest is in the same measure, but the cursor has jumped automatically to the next measure. This will confuse all but the most battle-scarred Finale users.

Yes, I get the rest as well. I guess I’m just so used to it, I delete it without even thinking about it. And like I said, this is only with the more complex tuplets.
I would guess that the rests serve as placeholders, and deleting them causes the program to lose count. Speaking as a COMPLETE idiot about computer function, my theory at its simplest is that you are trying to divide binary numbers by 3. Hence, the occasional leftover fraction, which the program shows as the extra rest. But I am the first to emulate Sgt. Schultz. “I know nothing. Nothing.”

I must then recant what I said about Mac not having the bug. I know it seems like a small issue, but it is just the tip of the incorrect math calculation Finale makes in the handling of Tuplets. We have reported this. Now, let's see what the "powers that be" at MakeMusic will do with it.
