When I open the Special Tools Palette, handles are not showing on any noteheads. I've tried clicking on different tools in the palette and clicking noteheads and measures, but the handles still won't appear. I've tried it on several different files, and it still doesn't work. I am running Finale 26.2.2.493 on a Mac and recently updated to Big Sur 11.2.1. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

If you are used to using the tools and are sure they're not working, and you have rebooted the computer to no avail, you might have to resort to resetting Finale's preferences file.

Thanks, I restarted and reset preferences. Special Tools Palette is still not working. Any other recommendations?

In the Special Tools drop down menu there is an item called Show Handles. Is that checked?

Aha!

Why in the world is there an option to remove the handles, which renders the tools useless?

From the Mac Documentation (since the OP uses Mac):

Show Handles. Choose this command to display a small square handle on each note, stem, beam, tie, or dot (depending on which Special Tools tool icon you're using). Deselecting Show Handles can be useful if the handles are obscuring some of the elements in your score. All the tools work the same way when handles are hidden, except that instead of clicking a handle, you'll have to click at the location where a handle would be if it were visible.

The handles have never been a problem for me, but whatever. One can always zoom in.

Bravo for knowing about that and apologies to Jen for wiping out her customized preferences.

Strangely, several users of Finale 26 with MacOs Big Sur have reported this "problem". Maybe the default setting is now to have "Show handles" unchecked. Let's hope that it is the case and that simply checking that menu item solves the problem.

If the notes are in one layer, and you have selected another layer, then handles won't show. I'm grabbing at straws here.

Also, what are the settings for handles in Preferences?

Last thing I can think of to check is to see if the size of the handles has been changed to make them too small or too transparent to be seen. I think it's in one of the preferences settings. Edit/Preferences/View/ Handles/ size and transparency.

As I see Zuill suggested already above.

I would go along with Zuill. I have occasionally missed the layer connection, and wondered why things weren’t right.

Checked layers, they're not the problem. I changed the Size and Transparency in my Preferences. I closed Finale and restarted my computer again. I'm still not getting handles. Aaaagggghhhhh!!!!!

It looks like this is a Mac problem, an incompatibility between Finale 26 and MacOs Big Sur. No mention of it on the Finale blog listing the problems with "Big Sur", a page that has not been updated since...Dec. 10, 2020.

I have been following this string with hopes of finding a solution to special tools handles not showing in page view. I checked preferences, layers, etc. I had the same problem in Catalina and just upgraded to Big Sur 11.2.3 ...no relief

All tools show handles in scroll view, but it is very cumbersome as one can imagine. I share jennthecomposer's frustration.
Apologies if I missed the solution to this issue in a post. And, very thankful there are people here that know this software so well.

Any idea if this was fixed in the 27 update? Just came across this problem for the first time and have an upcoming deadline (sigh). Tried all of the suggestions and no luck....

I am seeing in this thread that the users that are having the problem are using 26.2 on Mac. Maybe 26.3 fixed this.

I've been having this issue for a while now, also using Big Sur. Are there any updates? It's been 2 years I would hope they found a way to fix it by now.

They won’t be making any changes or fixes to v. 26, now that they have released 27. Try the demo, and see if your problem is fixed.
