I'm using a Yamaha DGX-201 synthesizer in connection with a Dell 3847 Windows 10 desktop computer -- to create piano arrangements in Finale 2003 (no snickers, please). Sometimes it works, but sometimes the notes that appear in Finale do not agree with the notes I press on the synthesizer and do not bear any relation to the notes I press on the synthesizer.

With regard to the set-up of my synthesizer, I always (1) check all MIDI connections, (2) turn on the synthesizer, (3) turn on the computer, and finally look in the MIDI menu to make sure the synthesizer appears both in the "In" part and the "Out" part of the dialogue box in the MIDI menu.

A rep at Yamaha told me to "toggle off" the "Local" function and also to allow at least 6 seconds between turning the instrument's power on or off and before plugging and unplugging the MIDI (USB) cable.

If anyone has a suggestion about what could be causing the problem, I would appreciate hearing it.

Do you need the Keyboard for playback? If not, only send MIDI from Keyboard to Finale, and not from Finale to Keyboard. I think turning off Local was going in that direction, but it's worth a try to only have one cable instead of 2.

The Huge type will not garner any better answer. :-)

The OP's prior posts are at normal size, albeit a long time ago. Hopefully there isn't an eye issue that has developed since then. One never knows. I tend to use slightly larger type for some documents to help in reading. Age, you know.

<< I think turning off Local was going in that direction, but it's worth a try to only have one cable instead of 2.>>

You're "the expert" (jokingly, casually said).

If "Yamaha keyboard" appears both in "MIDI in" and "MIDI out" and there's only one cable (one physical cable) connected from the synthesizer to the computer, this means that both "paths" are contained in the one physical cable, I guess.

Sorry about that. When you said all MIDI connections, I was thinking you had a USB on one end and 2 MIDI 5 pin connectors on the other. Since you only have one USB to USB, then my advice won't work.

If you've been using this for a long time and it suddenly started to happen, you might have to think backward and try to see what might have changed.

I just looked at the pdf Manual online, and I see that there are 2 connections on the back of the Keyboard. One is MIDI In and one is MIDI Out. I would disconnect the MIDI In. Make sure the MIDI Out goes to the In connector on your interface.

If the Yamaha keyboard appears in both the "In" and the "Out" drop-down menus, should I change the "In" drop-down menu selection to "none"? (I, personally, don't have 2 connections on the back of my Keyboard.

I can't seem to find a pdf manual for a DGX-201. I found DGX-200 and the attached picture shows the back panel with the MIDI IN/OUT ports. If you don't have this model, then I guess I can't help, because I can't find the model 201 anywhere.

You need the Input into Finale, for sure. If you don't need Output, then you can just change the output to the Softsynth, thus avoiding the signal going back to the keyboard. that might be what's causing the wrong pitch behavior. Were you able to try the instructions from the Yamaha rep?

I've looked high and low for "Softsynth" with no success. Are you (or anyone else who is reading this) able to suggest where I can locate "Softsynth"?

(Apparently, it's not too late to replay to this thread.)

I think that if you change playback to MIDI, you will see softsynth. (I could be wrong though…)

Softsynth is chosen in the Score Manager.

Don't ask me what it has to do with SmartMusic (I don't even really know what that is).
