This'll be an easy one I imagine: string quintet, only displaying instrument names the first staff. I'd like the instruments (violin, cello, etc,) on EVERY bar for this fairly short piece. (yes, looked it up, looks complicated for every single option.....I just need it to keep displaying like it does for the first measure.) Also, I have to add a couple pickup bars (16th century piece), and the Finale instructions are like 13 steps long....My understanding is basically: select the bar, measure tool, set it to the "correct" time (in this case one 1/8 note, then have it display "different time signature", which will be the regular time signature for everything else (in this case, 12/8.) Will this give me just that tiny little convenient pickup measure I need in a couple of spots?

For the instrument names, edit the abbreviated name to be the same as the full name.

For pickup measures, there are a few steps, but once you get it, you'll be fine. There's a plugin to split measures, which does a lot of the work for you. For example, you can divide a 4/4 bar into a 3/4 bar and 1/4 bar, and it automates setting the time signatures as you have described, as well as excluding the pickup measure in the measure count.

Where do I go to do this abbreviated editing? Thanks, it's confusing.

The pickup measure instructions seem correct, but try it and see.

I got it to work but, what threw me off was that the box was blank; there was "edit" and "text," and I figured I should be able to just tell Finale to use the names every staff.........can't I??

Not sure what you're talking about with edit and text, but Zuill's instructions are correct. The full name is shown on the first staff; the abbreviated name is shown on all subsequent staves.

I clicked on the exact place I was shown in score manager and there is nothing there. There's edit and text and nothing else. So I'm a little confused.

There's nothing there because nothing was entered for the abbreviated name. Type what you want. If it is for Violin, then type Violin in the window. Then press OK.
