saving - trouble

Having trouble saving changes to the attached file. Here's what happens:
I make changes in m.33. Then I try to save with Command/S (Mac).
It then says "could not be saved, file is locked." When I "try anyway" it
tells me I have no permission to save to desktop. But when I make a copy of the file,
I am able to save the changes to the file copy. What am I doing wrong that
I can't save changes to the attached file?

The file worked fine for me. I added a chord, and closed the file. I got the standard Save Changes? screen, said Save, and it did.
If a copy of the file is working correctly for you, just shake your head and move on.

Now I can't save changes to the copy file. At first I was able to, now I can't, I get the same message

Recreate Preferences? Maybe Mac has a similar issue to Windows involving the temp files.

On the attached file "TEST3" I don't seem to be having the problem.
What could be the difference between these files that I'm having the
problem only on the previously attached file?

I suspect a MacOs problem. I have encountered similar refusals with TextEdit for no apparent reason.

This may not apply to you, but when I move files to a new subfolder in Box or Dropbox on one computer while they are open on another (but still using Box etc), I get identical messages. If I close and reopen the files on the second computer, all returns to being as it should be.
I may be wrong, but I think something similar can happen if you move an open file not in Box et al on just one computer. Have you moved or renamed the file(s) in question?

Well, I don't use Drop or Dropbox because I'm not knowledgeable about them. I like saving just to my computer and then saving to an external drive. Yes I tried re-naming the files but it doesn't seem to fix this.

This is really weird - a major problem if I can't save changes.
I have no idea how to fix this.

This is a major problem for Finale if I can't save changes.

I usually back up my preferences file in case resetting doesn't solve the problem, so the settings can be reinstated. Once you back them up, in Preferences, click the button called "Reset all preferences". If things are different for Mac, then look it up in the documentation and it will explain the process there.

To find the Preferences file, look in the Preferences folder (where all programs store their Preferences files).
The file you should look for, is called 'com.makemusic.finale.fprf'.
First, quit Finale.
Then, move the Preferences file (so that Finale can not find its Preferences file).
When you launch it again, Finale will create a fresh, new Preferences file.

I simply meant that sometimes, files become corrupted for no apparent reason. If you can't save anything, that's a major problem.

I was unable to find "com.makemusic.finale.fprf" when doing a desktop search.
So I quit Finale as you said. At that point I don't understand "move the Preferences file."
How do I do that? Do I first open a Finale file and look under Finale/Preferences?

Hold down the Option key, and pull down the Finder’s Go menu.
Because you hold down the Option key, the user account’s Library folder appears in the Go menu.
Go to the Library folder.
From the Library folder the path to the Preferences folder is:

I am in Finder, am holding Option, and I don't see a "Go menu." see attached screen shot.

Along the top menu bar, it's visble in your screenshot to the right, first is ‘Finder’, then is ‘File’ &c. ‘Go’ is number 5 counting from the left.

It is OK if you move the com.makemusic.finale.fprf file to the Desktop.
When launched, Finale can not find the file because it is not in the Preferences folder.
