Recently I put this in a thread where it might not have belonged. Now a new attempt.
I've had some bad experience with staff masking/duplicating from before, so I made a new test. Here with the '=' Maestro character suggested in the other thread. Unfortunately it didn't go very well. (The staff size in F is 100%.)

In this other thread wess showed an example using the same 'mask' which looked just fine. I notice that wess is on Mac while I'm on Windows - could that explain our very different results?.
