I know I've done this before, it's been a while, but now I'm completely lost trying to do it once more.
I need a specific compound articulation: a down bow, then an up bow, the whole thing enclosed in parentheses.
I can't find the symbols when I try to create it as a shape in the articulation designer.
Is there some other way of doing it?
There's no option for inserting symbols in the articulation shape designer as there is in the simple text tool.
I'd really like to avoid having to input 4 separate articulations and then having to space them correctly. This is repeating across a large string section, and in all the parts (I use two different files for score and parts).

I wish I could help Michael because I would like to try some orchestra scores.

The Shape Designer is not exactly friendly. Set the font to Maestro 24. To get an up-bow, hold down Alt and type 0178 on the number pad; for down-bow, it's 0179. I would do the parentheses in another font. You might want to make all four characters separate, by re-clicking each time, so you can space them just how you like.
I found those numbers by looking at the font slot number in the text tool "Insert Symbol". I don't know why copy and paste doesn't work in the Shape Designer; it would make things much easier.
An expression may or may not be easier, depending on the look you want. But you can mix fonts, use baseline shift, etc., so that might be the way to go.

thanks all.
well, I ended up making an expression and adjusting the default placement options. so that worked.
I've found that often when making an expression of something that already exists as an articulation, there often appears to be a minuscule size discrepancy.
thankfully, in this case there wasn't.
thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I set this to align with the stem, and the vertical adjustment to 100 evpus. I also edited the baselines of the up and down bows to sort of center with the parens. It could still use some more tweaking; this is a quick-and-dirty.

Highlight the measure with the Selection tool and press 6 and 7 to see the positioning as the note value changes. I think with an articulation it's possible to make something that works with every position without manual adjustment. It depends on how many you have to do whether that's important, of course.
