On older versions of Finale, it was quite easy to just enter notes with speedy and then change whatever I needed to rests. Now, I have to enter rests first. Toggling "insert notes or rests" does not solve my problem and as far as I can tell... does absolutely nothing.

Please advise.

The toggle doesn't toggle between notes and rests--it toggles between insert and replace.

I don't think Speedy entry has changed in the 18 years I've been using Finale. What do you mean you have to enter rests first? Are you using a MIDI keyboard?

I'm just using my macbook keyboard.

Example: I select speedy and press "5" for a quarter note. I get a rest and then have to hit "function + enter" to get an actual notehead.

In the Speedy menu, do you have Use MIDI Device for Input, checked? If so, uncheck it.

Excellent, THANK YOU. Feel a little silly, but appreciative!

I first started using MusicProse 2.1, a cut-down version of Finale, back in the early 90s. It belonged to the school I was working at, so obviously, no one knew where the manual was. And no internet forums or online Help pages.

I could never get Speedy Entry to do anything except enter Rests, so consequently, I learnt Simple Entry instead.

Even though Finale now auto-detects whether you've got a MIDI keyboard or not (since 2012), the Speedy Entry default is still to assume that you'll be entering pitches with a MIDI keyboard.
