I'm working on an arrangement with strings, and when I copy an excerpt from violin to viola, Finale assumes I want it down an octave. The program also does that when I copy a flugel./tpt. excerpt to trombone. Is there a setting to get Finale to mind it's own business?

Preferences -> Edit -> uncheck the "Respect instrument Ranges when Copying or Changing Instruments" (fifth box down on my system).

I googled the answer, it came up about a half dozen times.
maybe you weren't looking for the right words in your search, it happens when one isn't familiar with Finale's jargon.

anyway, look up "Respect instrument ranges when copying or changing instruments".

there's an option you uncheck. it may have changed places within the last few updates to Finale, but it should be under Preferences.

Awesome. Thank you, so much! I never would have thought to look there, and certainly not use that phraseology!

Thank you again!
