Hi, everyone! I can't seem to find a way to fix the following problem of crooked ties in Finale. I made sure my music font has a font annotation file. Please see the screenshots below of the score with uneven ties, my current ties dialog box, and the tie contour dialog box. I'd really appreciate any help to make these ties straight! Thanks!!

I may well be wrong but in the upper voice the tied D >D and tied A > A look like slurs to me, not ties.

partridgefamily,

In your screen shot of the dialog box Tie Contour, in the pop up menu Style, the menu item Medium is chosen.

What are the Style settings for Short?
I suspect that the ties in your example are Short ties.

This is a long shot, but go to Special Tools > Tie Tool, select the tie and click any handle and click clear. If the shape of the tie has somehow gone wonky then this will restore it to default.

Thanks for the suggestion! I checked carefully, and it seems that all of these are ties; slurs actually end up looking a little better but are too far from the notes!

Hello, Peter! Thanks very much for your help. The screenshot of my Short Ties menu in Tie Contour is below.

Thank you for the suggestion, Bill! I tried clicking "remove manual adjustments" with the Tie Tool; unfortunately, the problem persists. I tried moving the ties around manually too, but it doesn't let me make the ties straight!

Can you post a sample file that shows the problem? You wouldn't need to show more than just the few measures you have above.

In the place where you tried clicking "remove manual adjustments" there is also "Edit" where you can "Reset" which would take all the tie settings to default. Does that do anything?

What causes these to be grayed out on Clear Selected Items?

I can't express how much I appreciate your help. You've solved the problem! I clicked on the "edit" option and was able to remove extra vertical space that had been weirdly added in. I think I will have to fix this manually for every tie, but it works. Thanks again! I've attached the file in case you're interested. I manually clicked "reset" for the first tie from the D5 to D5 in the upper left.

Hello, Motet, thank you very much! I really do not know why they are grayed out. I wish I had an answer for you.

Instead of fixing the bad numbers, what happens if you just remove the tie and reinsert it (two Ts in a row)?

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried removing the tie and reinserting it (pressing "T" twice) but the tie still comes back crooked. Such a weird problem!

In Document Options > Ties, at the bottom there is a Reset button. See if that cures all your ills in one go.

Thank you so, so much, Bill! It fixed every tie in one click. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of Finale!
