Slashed grace notes not working
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Finale 26 won't let me enter slashed grace notes. Is it a bug? Or is it not possible to make slashed grace note in 16ths?
I want to make sure the musician knows that I want the trill to be played on the beat and not before.

Do you want all your grace notes slashed, or just a few? If it's all of them then in Document Options > Grace Notes there is a check box for that.

Hi! Thanks! I've found the checkbox. It was already checked. The grace notes only appear with a stroke if they are not beamed. But maybe I just don't undertand how to write what I want it to sound like correctly.
I want to make a trill with two notes that starts on the beat and not before the beat. How do I achieve this? Or do I have to spell it out?

This way Finale plays it back the way I want it. But I would say it makes it less readable for the musician. After all it's just a trill.

The document setting and "slash grace note" function in Speedy entry only apply to single grace notes. For beamed grace notes, there is a plug-in, JW Grace Note Slash. You can find it at finaletips.nu

And slashing the grace notes per se won't tell the musician to play it on the beat. They'll probably just play a fast trill that starts before the beat. Since it has been the custom since the mid-19th century to play small notes before the beat, you will have to either write it out, or provide a footnote the way Ravel did in

Ravel makes his unslashed 32nd notes.

So quintuplets it is then? Triplets are too fast and 16ths are too slow. A traditonal swedish fiddler with some schooling (like myself) would know immediately what I'm after. But this composition is for a classical marimba player in an academy. I guess I'll have to explain it to her.

That's the problem with writing them out; you have to specify exact note values, and your really don't want to. Also, they begin to take over the page.
I would suggest Ravel's solution. Little 32nd-notes with a footnote. If there are many, and they don't have slashes, some players will notice that and suspect that they are not the usual grace notes but fast appoggiaturas possibly played on the beat. And they might even read your footnote...if it is prominently displayed.

What you want is not a trill, but rather a mordent, and there is a symbol for this, shown in the first measure below, though non-baroque players may not understand it. The slash means to play the note below. Elaine Gould has an interesting idea of showing the ornament on the beat with little notes with alternate stems, second measure; not sure if I like it or not.
I checked out mordent on youtube. It sounds like what I want. But I think I'll stick to my quintuplet now. At least I know myself what I am writing. And the percussionist is not a baroque musician either.
