The title says it all. Is it allowable to use a half rest covering beats one and two, or two and three, if there are notes covering the other beat? Or should it be 2, quarter rests?
I found posts saying both ways are correct, and I just don’t feel like going upstairs to the Gould. The general feel I get is that the half rest is OK, but the quarter rests are more correct.
What say you all?

A half rest covering beats two and three can be confusing.
I would not do that.
On The Other Hand, a half rest covering beats one and two can be an acceptable (readable) solution in “a tight spot” - even if standard practice is two quarter rests on beats one and two.

The only case in which I would use a half rest in 3/4 time would be under a fermata. As far as I could find in her book, Gould does not even acknowledge this usage, which is legitimate, and rules out all half rests in 3/4.
