Could it be a mistake? Is it possible it was meant to be AM - A major - but pressed the key next to the M on the keyboard which is <?

All good ideas, but I think it’s minor. It’s not a mistake, because it appears a number of times.The chart isn’t complicated enough for anything beyond major, minor, and 7th. I asked the person who sent it to me, and she doesn’t know, either. It’s the way she got it.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's someone's personal shorthand notation. It's certainly not a known notation. Assuming the C in the melody is natural, I suspect you're correct in that it means Am or possibly Am7.

Assuming that the symbol is “home knitted”, it actually makes some sense.
In mathematics the symbol ‘<’ means “smaller than” - which could be translated into “minor”.
