I haven't seen this before. Judging from the other chords, I suspect it's to indicate a minor chord, but I can't find it anywhere on line.

Nor have I. A very wild guess is maybe it means an A drone/pedal note.

Dim is a small circle.
There are some odd suffixes in Pop music.
2 notes, and Interval, is called a "Diad."
"A2."
Go Figure.
Or it means that A is Greater than some other, unseen Chord.

Could it be a mistake? Is it possible it was meant to be AM - A major - but pressed the key next to the M on the keyboard which is <?
Anyway I have just texted a friend of mine who is a session guitarist to ask if he knows.

All good ideas, but I think it’s minor. It’s not a mistake, because it appears a number of times. The chart isn’t complicated enough for anything beyond major, minor, and 7th. I asked the person who sent it to me, and she doesn’t know, either. It’s the way she got it.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's someone's personal shorthand notation. It's certainly not a known notation. Assuming the C in the melody is natural, I suspect you're correct in that it means Am or possibly Am7.

Assuming that the symbol is “home knitted”, it actually makes some sense.

In mathematics the symbol ‘<’ means “smaller than” - which could be translated into “minor”.

I had the same thought, Peter, which was one of the factors I used to decide.

Great minds, and all that!
