I've just started formatting the pages on my latest arrangement, and Finale has created a situation where it'll show a 5 bar multi-measure rest preceded by 2 separate single measures of rest. I've tried 'breaking' the 5 measure rest and then attaching it to the two orphan measure, but it comes back the same.

Has anyone else encountered this problem. It's going to look foolish in front of the musicians like this. BTW the two orphan measures of rest have nothing in them, so it's not a matter of a 'broken' multi-measure rest.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

....Brent

Could be that measure attributes are set to break a multimeasure rest, or maybe there's a expression attached to one of the measures. Something's causing it. If you can't figure it out, attach you file or part of it here.

there are several possible culprits.

1) The measure must be truly empty.
If the measure displays a Whole Rest, then the rest must be a Default Whole Rest, not a Real Whole Rest - since a Real Whole Rest will break a multimeasure rest.
Fortunately there are plug-ins for converting the rests - both ways:
Plug-ins menu > Note, Beam, and Rest Editing > Change to Default Whole Rests
and
Plug-ins menu > Note, Beam, and Rest Editing > Change to Real Whole Rests

Default Whole Rests in empty measures will not break a multimeasure rest.
Default Whole Rests in empty measures are “a display thingy”; you can toggle the Default Whole Rests on/off with the Staff Tool.

2) Certain types of Alternate Notation will break a multimeasure rest (even if the measure is empty):
Slash Notation
Blank Notation
One-Bar Repeat
Two-Bar Repeat

3) Measure Tool.
To get to the Measure Attributes, double-click a measure.
In the Measure Attributes there is an option for making a measure Break a Multimesure Rest.
Make sure that this option is de-selected.

4) Expression Tool.
Some expressions (like e. g. Tempo Marks and Rehearsal Marks) can Break a Multimeasure Rest.

Man, you two are good! The million dollar question, though, is how did just some of those measures have that "break a multi-measure" box checked? I certainly didn't do it.

But, no matter. I'm off and running without random empty one car rests now.

Thank you both, so much!

Did you use any plug-ins, or import you file from some other format?

The only plug-in I used was for cautionary accidentals. Certainly that can't be the culprit, can it?

I've never had a problem with it.

I guess I'm just a lucky guy. It's funny though...my computer was acting very slowly today, and I had to reload the program because the sound was all distorted. Odd that a bug or glitch like that would suddenly appear.

Thank you so much, again, for sharing your knowledge and technique. Over the years you have saved me countless hours of searching for the solution to my list of problems.

Cheers, Motet!

Question 1 - how do i crate a new post in this forum?

Question 2 - I have spent hours perusing the posts/solutions re multi measure rests not working in 27.1.0.271
None of the solutions have worked for me. It used to work but now all of a sudden it never works. Is anyone willing to take a look at an uploaded file to trouble shoot? This is driving me nuts. This feature was one of the reasons I upgraded!

Thanks

Look on the main forum page above "Announcements" and hit the "New Topic" button.

Yes, post a sample file and somebody might be able to help.

Brand new users can't attach files because of the possibility of spam. Make sure the measures are empty and have default rests, not "real" rests.

Try selecting the empty measures with the Selection tool, right-clicking on the first, and picking Multimeasure Rests/Create.
