new computer - problem with Finale files
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I have bought a new backup computer, exactly the same as the one I am currently using (Finale 2014.5 on WIN 8.1), but with WIN 10 Pro. I have downloaded and installed the same 2014.5 Finale version, copied all the relevant files, I think (Font Annotations, Plug-ins, etc.), but when I open a file there are some very weird problems, such as many stems being in weird positions. I have a feeling it has something to do with fonts, but ... can not find a solution. Somebody please take a look a the enclosed?

mmike,
I took a look at your attached Finale document, but I could not find any “stems being in weird positions”.
I also could not find any other “weird problems”.
Could you be more specific? - in what measure, in which staff, on what beat?

Mac OS X 12.6.9 (Monterey), Finale user since 1996
all the stems are out of position horizontally to the right (except, strangely enough, ecepting the last two bars in the clarinet staff ..)

when I try to change the font, or confirm the one listed (Maestro regular 24) it shows this message
Finale 3.7 > 27.4.1, GPO5, ASUS laptop, 18.4'' display, Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM, WIN 10 Pro, Cubase
this is from the font annotation file, which looks exactly like the one on the other (working) computer

Yes, it's definitely something with the system, not the file. I did a normal, complete installation. I can't remember now, but I think I copied the font annotation files because I didn't see them in the new installation. Maybe I should re-install it, althougn I don't really belive that'll solve it.

I've used Finale for something like 18 years and installed half a dozen versions and have never worried about font annotation files--I only have a vague idea of what they are. It's very unlikely that the installer wouldn't include them. Reinstalling will take you 20 minutes--why not try it?
I've used Finale for almost 25 years and have never had such a problem.
I re-installed Finale twice now, also after un-installing it completely, but that didn't help
To try something I changed the Default Music Font in Document Option to Petrucci, and then everything looked OK. Except the large time signature (which I haven't explored further now, too late ...)
There must be something wrong, though, with the Maestro font, no?
By the way, changing it to the Jazz font also works (even though there again comes that screen saying that this font isn't available ...) Beats me.

Did you add the font you're using to the Symbol Fonts list, as asked? That should fix the problem. If you're going to copy over files from another installation, the Symbol Font list has to come too.

Perhaps the permissions are wrong on the Symbol Fonts list file. I forget whether you're supposed to install Finale as an administrator, but maybe that's it. You can also try uninstalling it first.
Nothing worked, so I (finally) broke down and up-graded to Finale 27.1. Everything is fine now, well, almost. All the 32-bit Plug-ins of course don't work, etc. But it's a nice and clean new start ...
