I am using expressions to indicate instrument changes in a very large score as they can be configured with outlines much easier than if using text. I have created all the required expressions by making one, then duplicating it as required and changing the text to ensure they all have the same formatting.

However, whenever I assign one to a note which has been resized (this is for a piano/conductor score for a 2-Act musical, so includes a lot of cues scaled to 70%) Finale scales the expression to match the note size. I am therefore having to edit the expression assignment every time to deselect "Scale Expression with Attached Note".

This is proving extremely tedious (the score is largely keyboard-based and has a huge number of instrument changes) and I cannot find a way in Finale to globally switch this behaviour off.

Is there a Preferences setting I have missed?

You can use Fix font size or uncheck "Scale Expression with Attached Note" — (Shift+Return) on Mac, probably the same short cut in Windows.

As Wess suggested, I've used 15pt Fixed text, where regular unfixed expression text is 12pt. Just make a new category for this size.

Thanks for the replies but unfortunately neither suggestion solves my problem.

Setting a fixed size font does not stop Finale scaling the expression to the note-size. Since some of the expressions will be attached to 100% [scale] notes (as well as 70%) I would need to have 2 versions of each (and remember which was which when assigning them).

As I said, I am already unchecking "Scale Expression with Attached Note" - but have to do it every time I add an expression to notes which have a non-100% size. Right-clicking, selecting "Edit Expression Assignment", clicking the checkbox and closing the dialog takes a lot of time given the number of expressions involved.

I am really surprised that the default behaviour of scaling expressions with their attached notes cannot be globally overriden with a 'do not scale' setting...

I know of no global option.

You could make a separate category for expressions you use in this situation and set the point size to be 1/.7 = 1.43 times the normal size (e.g. 17 point instead of 12). Then it will be scaled back as if you had unchecked "Scale" in the expression assignment.

Alternatively, if you have a keyboard macro program, then a macro that does {Right-click}E{Enter}{Alt+C}{Enter} will uncheck "Scale...", which might speed things up a bit. I would go with the former, though.
