How can one instrument be made louder temporarily ( for a few specific measures)?

I looked on line for the finale manual on the subject but found no results. Is this possible in Finale 26?

Thank you for your help.

The easiest way would be to change the dynamic marking, for instance from mf to ff. It can also be done using the MIDI tool.

I hope that helps.

Bill Stevens,

Thank you for this message. I was able to find out how to change the dynamic marking. I highlighted the measures I wanted louder. I went to Plug-ins > Expressions > Auto-Dynamic Placement. In the resultant menu, I chose mf and applied it. when I got out of that menu, mf was applied to the whole line from the beginning as well as the place where I intended it to be. I haven't found how to remove the one at the beginning.

Is that another menu entirely?

Thank you for your help.

I don't think I understand your question. What I suggested was to use the Expression Tool, double click the measure, and select a dynamic; then do the same to change the dynamic back to how it was before. If you are trying to achieve something different let me know.

Bill,

I am trying to change the loudness markings (like mf and ff). How do I use the expression too? It gives me no opportunity to click on a measure. The Finale instructions seem to ask me to highlight the measures first. At any time in the process, if I click on a measure, it beeps at me.

I have version 26.

Thanks for your help.

At the point you want things louder, put in a louder dynamic, say ff. Just enter it as you normally enter dynamics, with the Expression Tool. If you don't want this dynamic to print out, right click on its handle and uncheck "Show". When you want dynamics to return to what they were before, put in another dynamic, say mf or whatever was before. You can hide it as previously suggested.

N Grossingink,

Thank you for your message.

I started another score to see if a minimal of settings would clear up the problem. It is one violin and I wrote a bunch of measures of notes. Then I highlighted the last few measures. Then I clicked on the Plug=ins and selected the expression tool and then auto-dynamic placement (no options there). Then I selected FF and looked at the expression page and clicked on ASIGN. Then I closed that window.

The result was that it marked the start of the new loudness as mp. If is always mp regardless of what I do.

Can you suggest anything?

I am willing to remake my entire score to get the ability to change the loudness of instruments to chage which instrument is taking the lead melody.

I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Thank you for your help.

Jim,

I think it might be helpful to you to watch some of the quickstart videos. You can start with "Add expressive text and markings to my document". This will show you how to add these markings to you score.

Don't highlight any measures, don't use any plugins. You want to use the Expression Tool (the "mf Tool") to put in the louder dynamic for the period you want it louder, then put in another dynamic to reset the volume to what it was. Please follow my previous suggestion - I can't explain it any simpler.

Jetcopy,

Thank you for alerting me to the videos. The method demonstrated for adding dynamic marking works and it is different from the method explained in the instruction manual. The markings appear correctly and the sound plays according to the markings, but I found no way to undo those markings except by deleting the measures to which they apply. Is there a better method?

Thank you for your help.

You can delete the markings. Single-click and they should highlight, and hit the Delete key. Or, double-click, select the handle, and delete.
