Okay, so I'm trying to define a trill to be a half-step.....as in a "b" mark attached. In the manual, I get:
........
"...to let the player know which notes are to be trilled, a small accidental, sometimes in parentheses, is often placed next to the symbol. (This tells the player to raise or lower the written pitch by a half step for the trill.) This symbol, too, is an Articulation; see Articulations. See also Engraver font - "Trill to” Noteheads."
........

Wherever I click, it seems to lead me in circles. What is the simplest way to indicate to the flutist I want a, say, "b" trill? It was suggested to me by someone that using the "custom line tool" works well, but I experimented and didn't get the result.

Thanks!

Do you mean you want to trill between B and C and C is natural in the key signature?

In this case I want the flutist to trill between the d sharp and E natural. I'm guessing they would just naturally do that anyway, but I was told it's generally a courtesy to make things very clear.

If E is natural in the key signature, just use a normal tr.

Okay. So I'm guessing the rule is that if the trill I want them to utilize is in the key signature, then it's just assumed?

The Custom Line Tool has trills with all 3 accidentals.

Yes, I was just a little confused how to select which type of trill in the custom line tool. I'm sure it's straight ahead, but please give me a hint.

Since you want to trill between D# and E-natural, select the trill with the natural sign, if you insist. To select it in the custom line tool, click on it and then click Select, or just double-click on it.

I'm not insisting, my understanding was that since E natural is in the key signature anyway, I don't need to even worry about it......did I understand correctly? The flutist would just naturally trill D sharp /E unless I specify otherwise?

That's right. So you don't need a custom line. Use the one that says tr, or use the articulation.
