Speedy Entry '=' too far away in windows
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I always thought it was poor design, but I recently noticed that
on a mac, there is an equal sign (for tying notes) right on the
number pad. In windows it's far away on the regular keyboard
which really interrupts my flow using speedy entry.
I will probably never use the '1' key on the num pad. Can
I redefine that to be '='? I tried creating a Finale Script, but
it forces me to use Ctrl, or Alt in the new shortcut which defeats
the purpose.
Anyone have a clever way of tying notes in Speedy without moving
the hand from the num pad?
Thanks!

You can program any key for that function with TG Tools Menu Shortcuts (I've used both the Zero and/or the T). There exists also a JW Tie Notes Plug-in that you can then assign to any key.

Use the T (for tie) key. It is already programmed to produce the same effet as =.

I would suggest to follow mmike's advice.

I was able to do a menu shortcut, but it behaved strangely. Each time
I'd hit the num pad 1 (the key I assigned) I'd see a tie appear and disappear
immediately as though I'd hit the key twice.
Yes, I have also experienced that now since I have upgraded to Finale 27.1 and Windows 10. I used to be able to do that, and in the past it was also possible to re-program the Speedy key functions. Now they seem to be locked and zero or 1 already have a function attached to them, so the TG Tools shortcut doesn't work. Just use the T key that's already prgramed to tie or un-tie.

The following works on my system (Finale 2014.5, Windows 10, US Keyboard):
- Close Finale.
- Find your finale.ini file. It should be something like C:\Users\Tobiah\AppData\Roaming\MakeMusic\Finale 27\finale.ini.
- Make a copy of it for backup.
- Open it in a text editor.
- Look for a line that begins SK0XX=65633, where XX is some number (on my system, it's SK075). SK stands for Speedy Key, and 65633 is the code for Number Pad 1.
- Replace this line with
SK0XX=65633 0, 0, -1, -1, -1, 25
retaining whatever XX was (e.g. SK075=...). - Save and quit.
- Start Finale.
- Disable the TGTools remapping of that key if it's still enabled.
- Enter a note in Speedy entry and see if Numpad 1 ties.
Did this, but it doesn't work. 1 still enters a (very short value) note. The hard-wired key for 1 is apparently still in effect. This isn't something that can be disabled in TG Tools. Can it be done somewhere else?

Should work if NumLock is on or not. It won't work if the Shift or Ctrl key is pressed. Make sure you've really disabled it in TGTools (where the key would show up as "#97"). Make sure there are no other SKXXX=65633 in finale.ini. Make sure you edit finale.ini with finale not running. When you close finale, it overwrites the file sometimes.
These are the references I have in the .ini file. But they both appear many (maybe 8 or 10) times as I scroll down.
SK077=65633
SK078=65633
I have only changed the first two, would I need to change all of them?
It's definitely disabled in TG Tools.

Couldn't upload it, but never mind. Too much time for not much of an effect. I'm happy with T and JW Ties.
Thanks nevertheless.

Did anyone ever find a resolution for this issue? Pressing "=" with my RH is a really big jump and an unbelievable PITA when done hundreds of times in one sitting. Is there really no way to keep your RH on the numpad while composing with Finale for Windows?
Indeed, that works. As a matter fact, in addition to using the NumPad 0 for ties, I also programmed the comma key on the right of 0 to add dots to note values - very convenient in Speedy Entry.
If you don't have the full TG Tools, you can download the TG Tools Free Trial. You can use all functions for a month (also extendable month by month for 5 months), but apparently the Keyboard Remapper function will remain usable without limitations. See https://www.tgtools.com/free.htm

If none of the software solutions work, and they really should work, you might consider an add-on to your keyboard hardware for music entry.
This one has an equal sign on it (many don't). Shown for example only, I've never used it or any other.

I believe the free TG Tools lite "Keyboard remapper" included with Finale will work without downloading the trial version.mmike wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 1:22 pmIndeed, that works. My numeric pad has a period, not a comma. Perhaps this is a difference between American and European.
The Finale built-in version is somewhat limited and, for instance, doesn't include (relevant to this particular question) Speedy in the remapping menu.
Yes, I have a European QWERTY keyboard and the numeric pad is slightly different (the European, except UK, decimal separator is a comma, having confused me for years ...).

Ah, I didn't realize that.
There is also a way to map Speedy keys in FINALE.INI. It's pretty arcane, but it works. I'm attaching a document by Jari Williamsson describing it. It refers to something called FinaleTweak, which I suspect no longer exists or works, but it can be accomplished without that.

Just a note to let everyone know that FinaleTweak is alive and well and working very nicely on my machine with 27.3. If this ever stopped working, I would probably switch from finale. It's a quick and handy way to modify the speedy keys items in the finale.ini file. Google "FinaleTweak" and you'll find the download.
