I want to add tremolos alternating between two notes, for instance between A and C. Specifically, I want a full measure of tremolos, so I'd use two half notes if I were using Easy Tremolos. But when I try using the articulation tool instead, I can't figure out how to make the tremolo do that rather than being attached to a stem. Help, please.

Why don't you want to use the Easy Tremolos? It's so much more, uh, Easy. The Articulation Tool plays no role in making the tremolo, either by the plugin or the long way.

Why don't you want to use the plug-in? The plug-in makes a triplet of 1 sixteenth in the space of two halves with the thirty-second notes shown below, then changes the noteheads to whole notes, hides the stems and tuplet stuff, and narrows the beams and moves them vertically. I believe it also creates hidden notes for playback. What do you want to accomplish that's different from what the plug-in does?
Edit: N wrote while I was composing this. As you can see, the bars between the notes are from the beam, not an articulation.

I don't want to use the plugin because unless I pay for the full plugin, there's no way to remove the tremolo without removing all the notes, too. And there is an articulation for tremolos under the articulation menu, so what's that for if not for adding tremolos?

I don't know. Can you make it non-horizontal?
Why do you need to undo the tremolo?
Unless you do the tuplet trick, you'll overfill the measure, which will make problems. If you do the tuplet, then you get the beams. You can do what the plug-in does by hand, as shown above.
