I have searched this forum and read everything to do with Finale crashing when entering lyrics. Really didn't find a solution, though. My problem is that I'm just beginning to enter lyrics. Whenever it needs to put in an extension (ironically, I don't want a syllable extension), it crashes. Is there a fix for this?

EDIT: I turned off using Smart Extensions for this document, then I entered spaces for all the notes that I did not want lyrics. (I'm entering lyrics for the first four notes of each staff). I was able to finally enter the lyrics without it crashing. However, if I enter the first four lyrics, if smart extensions are on, it crashes as soon as it creates an extension. With smart extensions off, if I enter lyrics for the first four notes, then click on the next staff, it crashes.

Does this happen in all documents, or just one particular one?

Can you post a Finale doc that exhibits this behavior?

If not limited to one file, I would try this ("Resetting Finale's preferences (using a tool crashes Finale, etc.)")"

Apparently it is just this document. @motet, I've tried resetting preferences (saw your suggestion on another thread) and that did nothing.

I just tried it on my system with Smart Word Extensions both on and off, and experienced no crashes.

You might try exporting the doc as XML, and importing it back in. That will often clear up corruption, although some formatting may be lost. Try it with a copy!

The rhythm exercises don't appear to call for lyrics. There are better and easier ways of putting "(2)" and "(4)" in the file.

The numbers are lyrics. All of them.

Instead of lyrics, I would make eight expressions, 1, 2, 3, 4 and (1), (2), (3), (4), and set the Position tab fields such that you can just click them in, having assigned metatools to all of them. You can make the vertical alignment point relative to either the below-staff base line or the staff reference line. To get the vertical offset from the alignment point to what you want, start out with it 0, assign one of them, and drag it vertically to where you want it. Then right-click its handle, look at its assignment and the vertical offset from the alignment point, then incorporate that offset into the definition. Do this for 1 and (1), then make copies to create the rest.

The metatool clicking will then go very fast.

That's definitely a way to do it. A lot more work than I just did, I think. Not interested at this point in redoing the lyrics. The attached document has everything in place now as far as the numbering. Sorry, I should have mentioned that and sorry to have put you through this much trouble.

No problem. If you have to do it again, I maintain my way is easier than using lyrics, but agree that what's done is done.
