How can I connect, in a group of 3 eighth notes, the beam of the first note with the third (both stem down). The second note stands apart (stem up). I'm notating Bach's 6th cello suite where the "stem down notes" are to be played on a lower string and the "stem up" notes on a higher open string.

This is a well known layout problem:

In this case with eighth notes, none of that is necessary. Enter the up-stem notes in layer one and the down-stem notes in layer two.

Then, either hide the rests or move them off the page with the Move Rests plug-in.
