Not sure how it happened, but on the bass part, there are many bars where there are just regular notes, but underneath it indicates, say, "32-36." When I right-click and break the multi-measure rests, the "missing" bars return to normal. Is there any way to fix these globally, or do I need to just go through the whole part, break the rests individually, then readjust everything? (9-minute piece.) I can do that if necessary, but I'd like to know which setting I messed up so I can avoid doing this again.

It's probably Options/Multimeasure Rests/Update automatically.

Yep, guess that was it: it was unchecked, and as soon as I checked it, the bass part returned all the measures to their normal state. Weird....not sure how it happened, but thanks.

With that setting checked, if you do manual formatting on the rest (such as measure width) and then change another part in the same measures, the manual formatting will be discarded. Moral: don't work on formatting until all music has been entered.
