I wonder if the bracket used at the beginning of measure 2 is correct. I
want to indicate that the D in bass clef could be played by the right hand.
Or should I just leave that up to the player. Thanks.

The bracket is not correct, no. I would leave it up to the player (the D is easily played with the left hand, perhaps more easily).

To answer your question, though, I think such a bracket would normally look like this

There is a lot concerning piano fingering etc. that is not completely standardized, but I think that what I showed is most common these days.

That said, I'm having trouble implementing it. Is it the Smart Shape tool, and which one? I don't see it.

You have to make a custom smart shape tool with "make horizontal" unchecked.

You can also create it as an expression, or as an articulation.

I would use the Shape Designer, and enter the shape as an expression.

Or you could just add it from the Bravura font, as I did.

musicus,

I suggested the Shape Designer because it gives you full control over the bracket.
You can get exactly the line thickness and line length you need.

But if a font (like e. g. the Bravura font) has a bracket character that suits your needs, then, by all means, use that font character.

I guess what I don't understand is why the Smart Shape tool doesn't
simply provide the bracket as it does other items like the cresc, dim,
trill, slur, and so on. There could have been an "other" box containing
other lesser-used items. Just saying.

You're right, but it's easy to create a custom smart shape, and this has the advantage of having an adjustable length. Ctrl-click on the custom line icon on the SmartShape palette. Then choose the line with the hook, duplicate it, then uncheck "Horizontal."

OK - I tried it this way: with the line tool. I create the first (vertical) line. Then I create a 2nd line and use the handles to make it horizontal. With some fine adjustments, the bracket comes into being. But the performer might still opt to play the darn note with his left hand. :-)
