Can't create double dotted notes

Hi,

I have Finale 27, PC with Windows 10.

According to the user manual, if I want to enter a double dotted note, I need to select the note and hit a dot key. I'm assuming either the period key or the decimal key would work.

I selected the note, hit the period key and a dot appeared. I hit the period key a second time for the second dot and nothing happened. I have played around with the Shift key, the Alt key, the Ctrl key, the decimal key, the period key, hitting it twice slowly, hitting it twice quickly, nothing works.

I have officially given up. Any ideas?

Which tool are you doing this with? Simple entry tool, Speedy entry tool, Selection tool, ...? Are you sure there's room in the measure, rhythmically?

Thanks for asking.

I do not have a midi keyboard attached to my PC. I enter everything via the DELL keyboard or trackball.

I am using the Simple Entry Tool palette.

In the picture - from the palette, I clicked on the quarter note and the dot to make a dotted quarter note and clicked in the 12th measure on the flute staff to create a dotted quarter C note. Being unable to do the double dotted note left me with the only option of tying the dotted quarter to an extra 16th note for the same result in timing and sound.

As you can see from the pic there is plenty of room for 10 dots.

The timing on the piano staff looks strange because I haven't learned how to do layers yet, but I'll leave that for another day.

To add a dot, press the period on the keyboard with the note selected.

I figured it out. I had to delete the 16th note first so that there was enough time left in the measure for the second dot. Thanks for your help.

m12 in Flute and Violin 1 looks like they should be unison, but they don't match up. I wouldn't use a double dotted quarter - rather C quarter tied to C dotted eighth, D 16th. That's more common practice so the beats are visually subdivided.

Still trying to figure out if the flute line is correct, or the strings lines. Have seen multiple scores with it one way or the other. Eventually I'll find the original score and then match them up. Thanks!

What's the piece?

I started with Bach's Prelude 1 in C major (the piano part). I was going to write a melody line on top of it but realized that what I was writing was sounding very similar to the one that had previously been written: "Ave Maria". Gounad used Bach's chords very well in writing on top of his music. So I figured, why fight it, I'm adding his notes in the strings and flute when I can find them in different duets. Trying to find his original version has been difficult. So, then my voice, which will most likely be clarinet and viola, instead of being on top of only Bach's song will be on top of both songs, becoming a third voice. That's the current plan anyway.

Do you know about IMSLP? They have the first edition there and it's a sixteenth note.

I have been to that site, but it is so huge and each composer has so many pieces, that I click and click and can't find what I want most of the time...

Of course, tonight I found it right away. YAY - Thank you so much!
