I'm copying a "musical theatre" score that has lots of cuts. I need to preserve the original measure numbers, as they appear in the original score. The problem is that when I'm deep into the score, and I want to specify the start and end of a measure-number region, Finale asks me for "true" measure numbers. It's extremely difficult to "do the math," and keep track of the true measure number.

How do I get Finale to show me "true" measures numbers?

You could create a temporary region covering the whole piece, in parallel with the other regions.
You can delete that region when you are finished.

Also, you might want to download and install the free plugin "JW Measure Numbers". That might assist in automating some of the work.

eharris56,

Measure numbers are displayed in two separate “contexts”:

- in the layout (= the Defined Measure Numbers)

- in Finale’s dialog boxes. The measure numbers displayed in the layout (Defined Measure Numbers) are independent of the numbers displayed in Finale’s dialog boxes.

In the program’s Preferences you can specify whether the program’s dialog boxes should display the Defined Measure Numbers, or the Actual Measure Numbers (= what you call the “True” Measure Numbers).

You choose display of Actual Measure Numbers.
In that way you can see both types of measure numbers:
- In the layout you can see the Defined Measure Numbers
- In the dialog boxes you can see the Actual Measure Numbers

Tip:

Measure Tool.
Double-click a measure.
You get to the Measure Attributes where you can se the measure’s number.

If you instead double-click a selected region of measures, then the Measure Attributes will display, what region you have double-clicked.
You can use this trick to change the Measure Attributes for all the measures in the selected region.

Where exactly in "Preferences" is the adjustment for measure-number display? I can't find it.

It is in
Preferences - View

The pane for Measure Numbers display is in the middle of the window.

NB:
The {Preferences - View} setting only affects the display in Finale’s dialog boxes, not the layout on the score page.
