Hi,
Is it possible to remove the stem for one note only in a stacked group of notes, all on the same layer? My example has two notes only one on top of the other and I would like the stem to remain for one note only.
It can probably be done on two separate layers but I would like to keep everything in the same layer. It can also be done with the Special Tools but that's too "manual" and inaccurate.
This is for F27.1.
Thanks.

Hi motet,
Two stacked notes, like C in the bass and G, a perfect fifth on top. Let Finale add a stem to that (like an eighth note), except that I don't want the stem for G.

I am not sure I understand.

Perhaps something like this?
Stemless.jpg
I used two layers.
In the upper layer I used the Special Tools Tool’s sub-tool Custom Stem Tool to replace the stem with an empty shape.
It only took a few seconds to do.

Peter, exactly.
Is it possible to do it all in the same layer? It seems that the stem is one big stem when I do it in the same layer, not two separate stems.

Seems logical to me. Just curious - what is the significance of the floating notehead? To most, it will look like a mistake.

Stems seem pretty wedded to the notehead.

You could do it with a line, perhaps a shape expression or a smart shape, like I've done here. Could be tedious, though maybe with the proper default positioning it wouldn't be too bad.

I'm curious to know of your Special Tools solution.

It's just an indication, meant to be in brackets.
I would use the Stem Length Tool but it's manual and I prefer to set things with more accuracy.

I don't believe the Stem Length tool will do it, will it? Looks like it only allows you to adjust the endpoint that's away from the notehead.

This is all in layer 1, but using voice 2 (Speedy entry). I got rid of the stem with the Stem Length tool.

Hi motet,
I was not familiar with voice1/2. I thought it was a newer feature but looked in my older version of Finale (2007) and it was there too!
What bothers me here with layers is that I need to enter rests in the measure even though that lone stemless note appears once. It looks as though voice1/2 doesn't have this problem. I wonder, since the two notes are separate voices, if the stem can be set individually instead of using the manual stem length tool.
I learnt something today. Thanks. :D

The solution from Peter Thomsen for removing the stem, using the Custom Stem Tool, is a cleaner solution than the Stem Length Tool I was using.

Is there a way to go back and restore the stem? Once I remove the stem with the Custom Stem Tool, using an empty shape in Shape Selection, if I click on the note's handle, the Shape Designer pops up. I can't get to the Shape Selection again.

Are you still using Finale 2007? (your Forum Profile to the right of your post says Finale 2007)

I could be wrong, but it is my guess that you can remove the custom stem by selecting the stem handle, and hitting the delete key.
At least that is how it works for me.

Hi Peter,
I have been coercing myself to use F27.1.
You're right, it worked for me too. I was looking in the wrong place (options in the cursor right-click menu).
Thanks.
