In the attached file, there is an end repeat sign as well as a bracket. The
bracket seems superfluous. I tried to remove it but the end repeat sign got
removed also. How can I just remove that bracket? Thanks.

Right-click on one of the handles of the line, unselect Show. It will disappear in the score and in the part.

Thanks for that. It then appears fainter on screen, but as you imply, it should disappear on the printout.

There's a preference "hidden objects shading" or something like that that controls how gray they appear on the screen. You can set it to 0 to hide them completely.
