moving Speedy rests

In accordance with the onboard Finale help, I've been clicking on Speedy rests in an attempt to move them to the best-looking location on the staff. But when I do this, the rests turn into notes -- a large majority of the time. Does anyone here have a suggestion for moving rests on the staff? (I've got Finale 2003a on my computer [no snickers please].)

Moving them up or down, presumably. I don't know how to do it with Speedy Edit. In Simple Edit, select the note (Ctrl-click or otherwise get the cursor on it), then use up- and down-arrows. There should also be a Move Rests plug-in.
You need to click-drag the rests (hold the left mouse button down and drag the rest into the position you want). If you just click the rest it will turn into a note.

Here's a piece that shows default rests that are too high, in my estimation. On clicking on them and trying to move them, the rests turn into notes (not something I want).
(I hope to submit this piece soon.)
(Although the date shown in File Explorer for this file is wrong, I believe it is the file with the default rests that are too high, in my estimation.)
Let me know if you're able to open it in Finale. My Finale is not on this computer, so I'm unable to open the file to check it.

I can open it. I suggest you use the Simple entry method I describe above rather than dragging with the mouse in Speedy entry. You must be in the proper layer first, so for red rests, switch to layer 2. Again, in Simple entry, Ctrl+click on the note, then use up- and down-arrow to move it.

. . . sounds simple enough. I'll try it later on. Thank you.

Okay, I checked out your suggestion using Simple Note Entry, and it worked! Here are some of the "accompanying behaviors" I found: (1) the movement of the note I clicked on had finite up-and-down movement, (2) sometimes a note in the same metric position would move in another staff and the note I clicked on would stop moving. (Don't press shift in place of Ctl like I did.) I'm sending a new instance of the file. Finale says below it's a .mus file although my Windows "open dialog" says it's a .pdf file.

It's just as easy to move a rest in speedy entry but apparently no one read my post. Drag the rest into position (hold down the left mouse button over the rest and drag it into the new position; don't simply click on the rest which will change it to a note). Holding "shift" while doing it will constrain dragging to a straight line. Pressing * will return the rest to the default position. All this presumes one has selected the layer that the rest is in. If you work in speedy entry there's no need to switch to simple entry to move a rest or note.Jasmine123 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 23, 2023 5:17 pm<<2. I read your posting and am happy to know that. Usually, dragging left or right is not desirable; as you say, Shift will constrain it to either horizontal or vertical, but I find it's easy to start the wrong way, in which case you have to start over. The Simple arrow keys are lass fraught.
Sounds like the OP has already entered the music, so switching tools is not an issue.

I have my movable preferences set to automatically constrain dragging, so I only shift-drag if I don't want to move in a straight line. Even if I start in the wrong direction (i.e., up instead of left) I can just press shift which releases the constraint, and move in the intended direction.motet wrote: ↑Mon Jan 23, 2023 9:16 pmI read your posting and am happy to know that. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

How does one "start the wrong way." I, as a novice, don't understand how one can "start the wrong way?"

I suspect he meant by beginning to drag horizontally when he wanted to drag vertically.Jasmine123 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 11:35 am<<but I find it's easy to start the wrong way, in which case you have to start over.>>
