Change Instrument

How does one use Utilities > Change Instrument when all channels in an Instance are used ?
It does not seem possible to set the required channel to an existing channel currently using the same instrument. (And ... I do not want to add notation to the existing staff ... too cluttered) .
Is the only way to add a New Instance ?
Is there a simple way to set up a command in the Expression Tool ?
Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your reply, Motet
Sorry it took so long for me to reply ... I forgot to check Notify Me
I will try and explain my issue more clearly
I Have An Instance With 16 Different Instruments
I Would Like To Be Able To Change An Existing Instrument (Piccolo) To Temporarily Play Another Existing Instrument (Flute)
Giving Me 2 Flutes Until I Return To The Piccolo
Also The Automatic Change Back (To Piccolo) Does Not Appear To Work In Mac Finale v26
I have no idea if Finale can be used this way, but it doesn't work for me.
And, most importantly, I think your reply (same channel) implies I cannot do this.
Thanks again Motet, and anybody else who might have a solution

When you use Change Instrument, the midi channel doesn't change, just the patch (like motet explained). No need for an additional midi channel.
The Change Instrument function is applied after selecting the region where it is used (otherwise it will be applied until the end of the piece). After that region, the staff reverts to the original instrument.

webs,
Indeed you can use more than 16 channels.
But we need a little more info from you:
Open your Finale document, and take a look in the MIDI/Audio menu.
Which playback option is selected?
Play Finale Through Audio Units?
or
Play Finale Through MIDI?
Also, take a look at the attached Finale document (which uses MIDI Playback).

Thank you again for your assistance Peter
I use Audio Units and several Banks (Each with 16 Channels)
I think Motet and Michelp may have solved this issue when they explained that ......
"When you use Change Instrument, the midi channel doesn't change, just the patch"
That is confirmation that Finale is not structured to do what I want to do (which is probably a little unorthodox anyway).
Thanks again ... please consider this issue resolved
