Started noticing strange behaviour as notes were getting squashed etc They even went off the page. Fine after update layout.

Went to preferences and noticed automatic layout was off so ticked the box for it to be on, then clicked apply. But it seems it won't apply. Just switches it off. Any ideas?

I have version 26, but may have to bite the bullet and go for v27!

Don't press the Apply button. Just check Auto Update, hit OK and go to the File Menu and select Save Preferences. Does it work now?

You'd think the Apply button would apply--how hard is that to implement?

If it's turning off on its own or otherwise doesn't seem to work, you might have to resort to this:

No, still not working. Maybe my program is corrupted?

Tried this a while back with something else (articulation boxes were always minimised) but did not fix it long term. Will try again though. Thanks all

Select everything. CMD-4 (Mac) or CTRL-4 (Windows) to apply music spacing. Follow it up with CMD or CTRL-U to update layout.

Yes, this will do it OK. Trouble is that when I'm writing the music does not reflow and will go off the end of the stave, so hard to keep track. Having to update every 20 seconds is not ideal.

Indeed. There's no good reason to have Automatic Update Layout off and they should get rid of it.

Meanwhile, does it happen with all documents? When you turn it back on, if you quit the Preferences dialog and then immediately reopen it again, is the setting turned off?

I can't agree with that, at least, for my workflow. When I add lyrics (particularly in barbershop, where I might have four lyric lines on different beats) I want things to stay still until I'm ready to move them.

That's not something I do, so touché. Usually, turning off Automatic Update Layout just makes unnecessary extra work.

Yes, the setting is still off. I've now done a reset of all preferences and this seems to have solved it for now. (Took ages resetting stuff up again).
