[I think this is terribly written - and I wrote it! I was upset...
I have changed "adds blank space between notes" to "adds rests between formerly adjacent notes" I have also learned I will get permission to add larger screenshots soon, since I an new here. BG]
Hi,
I need to change meters in a piece already written. Finale shifts the music as well as the barlines, adding extra rests between notes.
For example, look at the numbered attachments in order.
#1 shows m28 & 29 as both in 6/16 .
#2 shows after I changed m 28 to 4/16.(I chose 'rebar" and "only change m28"
Finale not only changed m29 as well as 28, but it adde3d a new bar before the 6/16 bar
Look at the botton of the score in the piano. In #1 the last note of m.28 (G#) is followed immediately by middle C# in m.29.
In #2, Finale inserted an 8th note rest between notes formerly adjacent, shifting the music over to the right!
#3 shows the ditance reducing to a 16th. I have no idea why, but this is messing up the music.
ONLY THE BARLINE SHOULD MOVE, not the space between notes!
Digital Performer has no problem understanding this!
Any ideas of how to change meters in this context without changing the sound of the music?
Oops! I cannot attach a 680kb ascreenshot. "Too big" it says. Any help on this too would be apreciated! (I tried dragging, and I tried clicking "Add files"

Welcome to the forum!
I trust you realize, how difficult it can be to diagnose something blindly with nothing to look at.
But have you tried the plug-ins
Split Measure
and
Merge Measures
?

Hi Peter,
Thanks for responding. I know a pic is worth 1000 words; which is why the error message when I tried to attach the screenshots was so frustrating. Since I can't attach them, here is a Dropbox link to them:

What can I do with splitting an merging? Not sure. Changing 2 bars of 6/16 into a bar of 4/16 followed by a bar of 3/16 will require Finale to flow the contents of the bars into subsequent bars, across a barline. Finale seems to add a bar after the 6/16 when I change it to 4/16, and then partially fill it. So "move beats into subseunt bars" which Finale often does when using Speedy Enttry is not an option here.
Should I split m28 into 4/16 and 2/16, and then m29 into 1/16 and 5/16? But then I am stuck with a 5/16 bar, whereas I simply want a meter change in m29 to 3/16, for m29 and subsequent bars.

When you changed 6/16 to 4/16, it made an extra measure for the remaining 2 16ths. What did you want done instead with those notes?
Since it made the new measure and I suspect you have systems locked, there's less room on that page and so the notes are closer together.

I wanted those notes to flow into the next bar, (without adding a new bar!) keeping the same distance between all notes at all times. This is the way Digital Performer behaves. I want to simply rebar the existing stream of notes - I don;t want to alter the stream of notes.
Here's what it looks like in DP after the edit:

Nobody has mentioned the free plugin "JW Meter and Rhythm". Perhaps that might be of help.

Hi N Grosinglnk,
Thanks for introducing me to the plugin - I will save it for future use.
Unfortunately it won't help here, because:
1. it cannot handle compound meters like 4+3/16
2. It cannot split a 7/16 bar into 4/16+3/16
3. It cannot flow notes that no longer fit in a bar after you've changed the meter. For example, changing a 7/16 bar in to 4/16 and getting the extra 3 16ths to flow into subsequent bars. (Like Speedy note entry will do on an individual bar)

I am sorry if I did not respond to Motet's suggestion: Yes, I tried the Rebar option.
Finale techs confirm my experiments - there is no way Finale will flow the notes to the left, if you have changed a bar to have a meter with more beats in it than formerly.
Finale recognizes the need to flow the notes when changing time signatures, since it does it going forward - with the Rebar option. (And Finale shows the ability to flow notes forward across barlines to the right when, in Speedy Entry, one adds more beats than the bar can contain.)

Good news! I think Brian Mulroney at Finale Powerusers may have the answer. I would love all of you to try his method with your own, more complex examples and let us know if it works!
It works for me in the simplest scenario I have posted on FB and provided a Dropbox link for below:. (I am still not able to post the example here - it is 515k!).

So it works for your particular scenario? You don't really say so.
