Okay, I don't know what is wrong - this wasn't an issue before - but now it is for some reason.
When I use Speedy Entry and a MIDI keyboard I can't hear any notes UNLESS I do the following:
MIDI/Audio >> Audio Unites & Bank Effects... >> Close
I don't change any settings - just the act of opening and closing the Audio Unites & Bank Effects window is enough to get sound.
But, why?
It wasn't like this before.
Even after getting the sound back in a document - if I close and re-open that same document - I've got to open/close the Audio Unites & Bank Effects window to get sound - every time.

I can't tell you where or what but it is almost always a driver conflict. Some other app may be hogging the sound driver for instance. The driver may need updating. You may need a change in your Finale sound set up. But something is conflicting somewhere. On a Windows machine if you are Mac you'll need somebody else to advise.

There are also myriad settings in Finale to experiment with.
Sometimes Finale is mysteriously silent when I launch it, and simply quitting and restarting fixes it, or perhaps rebooting, so we're dealing with fragile and imperfect software, I think.

Nothing changed - that I'm aware of. Other than suddenly needing to do the following to hear sound:
MIDI/Audio >> Audio Unites & Bank Effects... >> Close
That the above action doesn't change any settings - which is kind of weird.
What grates is that it wasn't this way before.
I'm using a Mac.

Would you care to post the file here? I am sure one of the guys can find the cause. At any rate we can tell you whether it is even the file or not. It may be on the computer side.

I'm sure it's a setting . . . somewhere . But, actually, it kind of seemed like audio settings where per file - since I made a template with louder volume when using Speedy Entry (this did not cause the no sound issue).
This puts favor toward my idea of using external hardware as the sound generating mechanism. Finale's sound always trips me up.

I'm not so sure it's a setting within the document because the act of simply closing and then opening that same document without making any changes will turn the sound off.
To get sound (using MIDI keyboard) - I MUST DO THIS
MIDI/Audio >> Audio Unites & Bank Effects... >> Close
Then I have sound. Yet, no settings where changed.
If I close the document and then open the same document document - there is no sound again - and therefore I must repeat the procedure:
MIDI/Audio >> Audio Unites & Bank Effects... >> Close
Previously - I just had sound as per the settings within the document.
Also, there is another weird way to get sound - it is similar to what is described above (not actually changing a setting - but just jostling Finale). Here is that procedure:
Go to MIDI/Audio and toggle Play Finale Through Audio Units. In my document (attached) Play Finale Through Audio Units is already checked. Select Play Finale Through MIDI and then immediately after this go back and select Play Finale Through Audio Units - then there's sound. But, close the document and re-open and there's no sound again.

Post a sample of the actual file, with notes!

Wait. You need notes to hear something? j/k
I purposefully sent a blank document. It is important to point out that the symptom is this:
1) open blank document
2) click Speedy Entry tool
3) enter notes as you normally would with the MIDI keyboard
THIS is when I don't hear sound.
And, as I have said a few times before - to get sound while entering notes I do the following:
MIDI/Audio >> Audio Unites & Bank Effects... >> Close
OR
Toggle MIDI/Audio and toggle Play Finale Through Audio Units. In my document (attached) Play Finale Through Audio Units is already checked. Select Play Finale Through MIDI and then immediately after this go back and select Play Finale Through Audio Units - then there's sound. But, close the document and re-open and there's no sound again.
I think it would be much easier to create a video demonstrating what I am describing.

Yes I need the actual document with notes because there isn't anything wrong with the blank file you sent. It works perfectly for me.Post a sample of the actual file, with notes! ... Wait. You need notes to hear something? j/k

It's probably not the document. Application settings won't be saved in the document. Nor will other audio/system configs.
You could try contacting MM, who will ask you to jump through the usual hoops, like reinstalling, regardless of whather it's necessary or not.
