importing mxl files from cpdl

Hello,
I am using for years CPDL.org files. Before they were either Finale or Sibelius etc files. Now they changed into MXL. When I import them it is full of mistakes and it takes forever to correct them. Text placing, lay-out, incipits etc.

Am I doing something wrong or does it just not work?

Music XML has evolved over the years. If you are still using Finale 2014, your XML version import may be the culprit. I would suggest downloading the demo of F27, and see if there is any improvement.

CPDL documents are often full of mistakes, in both music and layout, whatever format they are in. I swear it must take people more time and effort to produce some of the awful scores there, than it would to make a half-decent one.

You will often find several formats -- usually the notation app's file, the XML and a PDF.

Thanks. CPDL used to offer finale and Sibelius files but they now changed to mxl which is troublesome to say the least!

I don't use CPDL but out of curiosity I downloaded a random Palestrina piece. The PDF looked pretty good, but the Finale file from XML would take a lot of work. So yes, "troublesome to say the least," unless you can make do with PDF.

It's up to the person who uploads their editions what formats they choose to supply. I'm not aware of any policy change.

There's no reason why MusicXML files should necessarily be troublesome. There are plenty of Finale files there that need plenty of work, too!

Sure there are problems but I'm glad to see MusicXML being used because its adoption by a wider user-base spurs development and it has come a long way in its lifetime. Not so long ago about the only broad interchange format was MIDI.
