Hi,

I have composed a some little diatonic pieces inspired by part 4 of Ligeti's Musica Ricercata. The key signature of which is a non-standard F sharp and B flat.

I would like to emulate that in Finale 27 but have spectacularly failed to do so using the "other" key sig tools. Is there a way to do it? If so I would be grateful for some pointers; many thanks.

As a fallback F# + A# would also work I guess.

In the Key Signature Tool, select Nonstandard.
In the manual, you'll find the steps.

It's exceedingly arcane, but long ago I wrote up a set of instructions which should help. I just followed them and was able to do it. I've attached both instructions (zipped PDF) and a .musx file.

Here is a picture of one of the steps. Ask here if you run into trouble.

No need to do it so “exceedingly arcane”.

Just use a Nonstandard Linear Key Format Signature with two accidentals, and change one of the accidentals.

If you go to Linear Key Format 2, all five buttons will become active.
Click the (now active) button Acc. Order, to get to the dialog box Accidental Order and Amount.

The accidentals
Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, …
are sharps.

The accidentals
Unit -1, Unit -2, Unit -3, …
are flats.

Hey all, I'm working around this same problem. I was able to get by with just downloading motet's musx file, since my project also just uses Bb and F#, but for the future I'm wondering what I did wrong. When I walked through all of motet's steps, I was still left with a key signature with 7 sharps instead of the 2 accidentals needed. Seems like the place I was starting from was with all those sharps. Any ideas?

Thanks!

If I understand you correctly, your project has the two accidentals in the opposite order:
First B♭, next F♯
- right?

Take a look at the attached Finale document (in v26 format) which shows {First B♭, next F♯} in the simpler solution with a Linear Key Format.

If you would like to know, what went wrong when you tried to do the same with a Nonlinear Key Signature, then attach your Finale document here.
I am confident that one of the gurus can find the culprit.
