Is it possible to create linked parts for single-line instruments and also for a group from the same score?
I am making parts for a wind ensemble piece, and I want the 5 percussion staves to be on the same part, while having the other instruments each with their own single-line part. I can't figure out how to do it.
Do I need to make a copy of the score especially for the grouped percussion part, perhaps?
I'm pretty sure I successfully did this once before, but it has been a long time, and I don't remember what I did.
Thanks,
Mark

Yes. Go to Manage Parts and create a new part. Where it lists available instruments, you can pick your percussion instruments one at a time and click Add to Part. If you've already created parts, you can get rid of the individual percussion parts in Manage Parts.

Document > Manage Parts> Edit Part Definition. If you want multiple instruments in a part select them from the far right pane and Add to Part.

Well, I thought I understood! I carefully got all of the parts in the linked part window as I wanted them: all single-line parts except for two groups. And then I clicked on "generate parts", and it filled the linked part window with all of the "available instruments", including those I had joined with others in groups, and it eliminated my 2 groups.
What am I doing wrong?

Generate Parts does it all from scratch, deleting the choices you made. Once you add an instrument to a part that takes care of it. If you need fuller instructions, let me know.

Okay, you have the three panels. Click the instruments in the right panel you want combined and add to the part in the middle panel. Then you can change the name of that if you want and the new name will show up in the left panel. That's all. Now that combined part will be there under Edit Part.
Generate Parts is what you would use once you have finished a piece but don't have linked parts and it will do the heavy lifting, but it won't know that you want some instruments combined.
I hope that works for you.

Thanks for your help. I feel particularly stupid, since I just figured all of this out before clicking 'Generate Parts' and then having all of my work on setting up the parts eliminated, just like that!Bill Stevens wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 8:54 pmGenerate Parts does it all from scratch, deleting the choices you made. I have 31 staves in this piece. All will be separate parts *except* for two groups: oboe2 & English horn, and the 5 percussion parts. I had no trouble setting those up. But how do I get the other 24 instruments into the "linked parts" window? The only option I see is "New Part", but that is for setting up a new GROUP part, not for moving the other 24 instruments into the linked part window.
As I say, I feel like quite the dunce here, because I just did this, now 30 minutes ago, and I do not see any other options for how to move those other 24 instruments into the left window.
Attached is a screenshot for how things stand at the moment.
Thanks,
Mark

And when you generate parts the parts eventually to be combined will end up in the left panel, so after they are combined you will want to delete the individual parts. You don't actually have to delete them, but there's no reason to have them there.

Thanks! Yes, it's nice to avoid the annoyance of moving to the next instrument and having it one you aren't actually using.Bill Stevens wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 10:14 pmAnd when you generate parts the parts eventually to be combined will end up in the left panel, so after they are combined you will want to delete the individual parts.
