I am having a heck of a time.

Finale 27.3.0.160
MacBook Air; M2 2022
Ventura 13.5.2

I use the Toccata Font occasionally for articulations.

I created an articulation and didn't notice until I printed to PDF that anything that uses Toccata shows up as the Question Mark Box in the PDF.

When I checked the file, everything shows up on the screen and Articulation selector just fine. However, if I Edit the Articulation, I find that it shows up as a Question Mark. This is when I noticed that the Toccata Font does not show up at all in any of the Font Selectors in the program. (I have tried the app with and without Rosetta)

Toccata shows up in all other apps on the same computer.

I checked the Application Support folder, and Toccata is missing a FAN file, so I though I would add one. This is when I noticed that in Settings/Edit, the Font Annotation button is greyed out and inaccessible.

This is where I am out of ideas. Toccata is bundled with Fughetta and I have no problems with Fughetta. What should I try next? I do not have access currently to the computer in my signature.

If the font is on your computer, which it must be if it works in other programs, I would suggest refreshing the Preference file in Finale.

Could it be a SMuFL issue?

… I printed to PDF …
1) No promises, but the problem might be solved by, instead using the Graphics Tool to export as PDF (which also is a little faster anyway, and the PDFs might be smaller in file size).

2) The culprit could be a conflict between an older font (= Toccata) and a newer OS version (= Ventura).

The following is a test (not a solution):
* Does the Toccata font work correctly in other programs?

If the font works correctly in other programs, then there is reason to suspect that the problem is not a problem with Ventura.

If you've converted the document to use FinaleMaestro, then Toccata may not work as a font for music symbols, because you're now working with a SMufL-font.

However, you should find that most, if not all, of the symbols in Toccata are somewhere within FinaleMaestro.

I guess I wasn't clear in the post:

I printed to PDF, did not export using the graphics tool. I used the native MacOS Save as PDF from the Print menu

Toccata works and prints fine in other programs, including other music notation software.

I have no idea what Smufl means. I mean, I just googled it, so NOW I know what it means, but I do not know how I would begin to convert a document to be smufl compliant. As far as I can see, there is no Convert to FinaleMaestro or Smufl in any of the menus. There is a Finale Maestro font that shows up in the font list, but I do not use it in my template. None of the Articulations I use Toccata for are in Finale Maestro.

Again, it is just certain articulations that are not working - just where I use the Toccata font. The majority of the file comes out fine using Gonville as my primary font. I just use Toccata for some articulations that I can't find anywhere else. I checked on my iMac at home, and toccata works fine on Finale on Ventura there.

When you say refresh Preferences, do you mean "Reset all Preferences?"

I Reset Preferences and it did not help. The "Font Annotation" button is still greyed out in Settings|Edit.

Toccata font still does not show up in the font list in Finale on the macbook (M2). It still shows up and works and prints to PDF in all other applications. No problems on the iMac (Intel) so I am assuming it has something to do with the processor. I rarely use these few articulations for which I use the Toccata font, so I will just have to make sure to only make PDFs on the Intel computer.

Is the Intel Mac on the same OS version? Processor-specific differences are very rare -- and it would likely not be restricted to Finale.

However, I can confirm that Toccata doesn't show up in the Finale font menus for me. (Finale 27.3, Sonoma 14.1). I suggest filing a support request with MakeMusic.

Yeah - you are correct. both computers are on the most current version of Ventura. Finale 26 was the application I checked, out of habit.

I also keep Finale 26 on the iMac for printing to PDF purposes since when I print to PDF on Finale 27 it does not auto-fill the filename (it just says "untitled" and when creating orchestra parts for collaborators it leads to a lot of filename errors) Finale 26 loads Toccata fine for me. Finale 27 does not, just like on my Macbook. Ironically, the "untitled" issue does not happen on Finale 27 on the Macbook.
