i know how to make a triplet with eighth notes: in simple entry mode, i select 8th note + simple tuplet from the palette. then i just click on the staff 3 times, and i have my triplet.

when i try to do the same thing with a quarter note, it doesn't work. what do i need to do to make a triplet with quarters?

i also tried the tuplet tool. i clicked on those messed up quarters in the image, and it says use "3 quarters in place of 2", which is what i want. so, i don't get it.

Works for me. There must be something else going on. I am using 27.3 on Win 11. Your example didn't show a time signature though. I was entering into an empty measure in 4/4.

i'm in cut time, but i just tried it in 4/4, and i get the same problem. i'm using version 27.2 on a mac (ventura 13.4). if it works for you, it's probably a bug with my older version.
