So, maybe this is the "official" respond from MM on this issue...

Well, that's the good news of the day! So, it wasn't intentional! It was unintended! YAY! I can only hope/pray they will resolve this ASAP. Thanks for telling here. I am now following that thread on their Zendesk.

It sounds like they will fix it. Since they would have needed to do something special to route the choice of CutePDF, say, to Microsoft Print to PDF, though, I suspect it was not accidental, but rather not thought through that the various print to PDF programs might have different features.

Finale 27.4.1 is now available. I just installed it. I haven't needed any of the fail modes but I'll post if something else went wrong. (The announcement popped up while I was editing an arpeggio.)

Yup. In 27.4.1 CutePDF works again, though I have to say that I have been pleased in the interim that the export-to-PDF in Finale seems also to work (at last!). Hats off the MM for the fast fix. That is a nice change. And I really appreciate the lyric slur improvement that came with 27.4. More of that, please, MM! 8)

I tried export to PDF on a letter-size document and it rendered it as 10 x 13 and is over five times the size of what CutePDF creates, so I'm not sure there's much cause for celebration.

But, does Print... (Ctrl/Option + p) work as before 27.4 with the Adobe Acrobat Pro drivers? Dare I install it this weekend? Please say "yes". :D

Thank you.

I, at least, had no problems with printing to Adobe Acrobat Pro after the last update. The size of the file I tried with was app. 1/3 of what it was with Export Pages in Graphics tool before the update - good enough for me.

I'm a little surprised that Motet mentions Export to PDF. I thought most people here agreed that that 'printer' isn't very good.

I'm grateful to MM not because they give me a cause for celebration, but for making my job a little easier.

Thanks Anders for confirming. Appreciated.
I have never used "Export to..." either and I am very dependent on the Adobe Acrobat PDF driver 1.4.
Clicking Finalesetup.exe now. :-)

Finale 26.2 and 26.3 both had "hot fixes", coming out shortly after the initial release, because of stuff that the updates broke.

But you're right: there's some really good stuff in this update that may have gone unnoticed, because of 'other concerns'.

Productivity enhancements that make existing processes faster and easier; and improvements to note spacing (and collision avoidance) --- these are exactly the areas that MM needs to work on, to stop Finale falling too far behind.

I was responding to Simon_Furey's saying he's pleased about it. I looks like they've replace the old problematic code with Microsoft print-to-PDF, which would be good for new users, but I tried it on the default document and it created a 10" x 13" document rather than the letter size of the default document, which is bizarre.

Quick update...
I upgraded Finale to v27.4.1.110 tonight and I confirmed I can print to PDF using Nitro PDF Pro. Comparing the file size and this version and previous version has same size, so I am happy.

... also here the 27.4.1.110 works perfect with Adobe Acrobat Pro v1.4 driver!
And, may I add, the tie over system breaks is also an improvement.

On the Mac

Print > PDF > in dropdown, select "Open in Preview". There's your PDF.

It will be in a software print cache, but in Preview's menu, you can 'move' it anywhere you want (which, of course, is a form of saving). I sent to a friend via email, and they were able to open and print it.

Also, in Mac Finale, you can use the Graphics Tool to export as PDF.
Might be a little faster.

Using the graphics tool, my vector editor (affinity designer, sim. illustrator) queried me for fonts. Using preview, the fonts remained with the file. In terms of time, probably a draw.

edit: get it? illustrator? designer? draw?

So, it wasn't intentional! It was unintended!
The more shocking thing here is, MM didn't try it before they released 27.4 had they tested it, it would have never got released. Knowing Finale's past release history don't you think MM would be wise to test all the functions before they release an update? I dunno seems logical.

I suspect it was intentional and someone thought that one print-to-PDF was as good as the next. I don't see how it couldn't have been. Someone had to disable the printer choices. What was unintentional, I guess, was not realizing that Microsoft Print to PDF is an inferior product and is in fact not as good as the next.

I spent more time in detail with the two workarounds and overall the graphic tool actually retained more font information. Preview drew and printed correctly. Easy. But in editing, there were font substitutions as Finale is sending over Times (not new roman) but my vector program let me substitute in advance with Graphics, but no warning in Preview.

So either method is fine if going straight to pdf

The Graphics tool is better if you need to tweak in adobe or affinity.
