Hi,

How can I display the full names of instruments on the first page of each movement in an orchestra piece?

Thanks!

I think many people on the forum would do each movement as a separate file, and join them as PDFs. That would automatically do what you ask.

Thank you, miker!

That is a valuable information for the future.

Is there anything I can do in my current situation to make it happen, or is separating the movements into separate files the only way to proceed?

Thanks!

That would be my suggestion. Or, you could add the instrument names as text frames.

If I understand your question correctly, the Measure tool offers a solution (see image) or you can define and apply a staff style displaying the full name.

There is a JW plug-in ‘Start New Piece’ that does exactly what you want. If you have the latest Mac soft and hardware you'll need to operate in Rosetta mode to use this plug-in.

This may be slightly OT, but I've found that having separate files for each movement is useful mainly when a one-in-all file becomes too big for Finale to manage (which does happen!). In smaller works, keeping everything in one file makes it much easier to create parts where new movements can start anywhere on the page instead of having a number of pages with just one or two staff systems.

Of course, if you're good att PDF programs, you possibly might combine more than one movement on the same page there, but I never tried that. What held me back was that I guessed that if you make changes in the parts, you'd have to repeat the whole process of copying and pasting in the PDF program. But maybe there's a way round that?
It actually might be useful in bigger works too, come to think of it.
