Rests automatically largest value?

Hi!

Is there a way to make Finale autofill rests automatically with the largest value?

E.g.: if I have two spare beats at the end of my measure, make Finale insert a half note rest instead of two quarter note rests?

There is another solution.
Not what you are asking for, but …

Enter all the music.
Selection Tool.
Select All.
Utilities menu > Rebar > Rebar Music

The command Rebar Music will respect the time signature so that you do not get a rest that straddles across a beat.
Example:
Time signature 3/2.
qtr - qtr rest - qtr rest - qtr - qtr rest - qtr rest
Rebar Music will combine the last two qtr rests, but not the first two qtr rests.

If you mean add rests as you enter music and move to the next measure, both Simple and Speedy entry tools have an option "fill with rests at end of measure."

If we are speaking of 3/4 fx. it's not considered correct to combine the last to quarter rests into a half. Traditionally notes may be syncopated of course, but not rests. At least not larger ones like quarter and half rests. If I've understood you right, you want to do something Finale doesn't do by default, but if so, Finale is right this time.

Thanks for the input but it doesn't really solve my issue.

I'm currently working on a 6/4 time signature. When I enter a quarter note value, Finale fills out the rest of the bar with 5 quarter note rests, instead of one quarter note rest and one whole note rest, which is how I would like it.

Is there a way of telling the software to fill out the rests like this? (automatically the largest rest value)

I don't think so.

The standard rule is to expose the middle of the bar, so filling out 6/4 looks like this:

Generally You probably want to choose the following in the time signature dialog in Finale--two beats of dotted halves--rather than six quarter notes. Then Finale will fill it in as above.

Motet put it very clearly. I can add spelling out how it would look like if you have this 'three big beats' in the measure - 3/2. A is correct because it shows all the beats - here half notes. B is not, because it doesn't.
