Please forgive me for posting a request for computer help here, but I trust the good people in this group and the collective knowledge of you all.

I somehow stumbled upon something that installed itself on my Mac Mini. Every 5 minutes or so a warning flag shoots out from the upper right of the screen. The message varies but is usually "McAfee Virus Alert" or "Someone Is Trying to Download Files From Your Computer". The System Preferences "Gear Icon" also appears on this message flag. Quitting and restarting doesn't get rid of it.

Sound familiar? Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I would run Malwarebytes, a free malware checker. I'm on Windows, but I think there's a Mac version.

There is, and I’ve used it for years. I quit Mcafee years ago.

There are two options: either this is genuine McAfee software, which you've installed, giving you a genuine warning; or a fake warning, trying to get you to download and install something. I would suspect the later.

As Mike says, Malwarebytes is recommended and trusted. If you have installed McAfee, I would uninstall it.

I'd be surprised if "Someone Is Trying to Download Files From Your Computer" were a real McAfee message. (Instead, it would prevent the download and report.)

Thanks everyone. Malwarebytes seems to have done the trick.
